Trust and Estates Tax Preparation

TRUST AND ESTATE TAX RETURNS

Tax returns for trusts, estates, and the people who manage them.

When you become a trustee or executor, the tax filings become your responsibility — often at a difficult time. At Victoria Bogdanovich CPA, we prepare the returns, explain what’s required and when, and work with your attorney so that beneficiaries receive the right tax information.

Who this is for

  • Trustees of family, living, and other trusts that must file each year
  • Executors and personal representatives of a decedent’s estate
  • Families filing a loved one’s final personal return
  • U.S. grantors and beneficiaries of foreign trusts, and recipients of large foreign gifts

What we handle

  • Form 1041 — annual income tax returns for simple and complex trusts and for estates
  • Schedule K-1s for beneficiaries, so income is reported on the right return
  • The decedent’s final Form 1040
  • Form 706 — estate tax returns, including returns filed to preserve the unused exemption for a surviving spouse
  • Form 709 — gift tax returns
  • Forms 3520 and 3520-A — see Foreign Trusts

Why it matters

Trust tax brackets are compressed. A trust reaches the top federal rate at a much lower income than an individual does. Deciding whether income stays in the trust or is distributed to beneficiaries can change the total tax.

Deadlines start right away. An estate can choose its tax year, and some elections are only available on a timely return. Getting advice early gives you more options.

Trustees can be personally responsible. Filing correctly protects you as well as the beneficiaries.

How it works

  1. Check your fit — about 1 minute. Answer a few questions and see your starting fee.
  2. Create your client portal account and complete our Client Application.
  3. Meet with us — free Tax Discovery Zoom meeting. Upload your last two years of returns at least 24 hours before the meeting so we can discuss an estimated fee range on the call.
  4. Receive your engagement package with your estimated fee and scope of work. Work begins once you sign.

Starting price

Trust and estate returns (Form 1041) typically start at $1,250, quoted after review. Estate tax (706), gift tax (709), and foreign trust returns are quoted separately. Your engagement package sets out your estimated fee and what it covers. Work outside that scope is billed separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does a revocable living trust need its own return?
Usually not while the grantor is alive — the income is reported on the grantor’s own return. After the grantor’s death, the trust generally starts filing Form 1041.

Do you draft trusts or wills?
No. That’s work for an estate attorney. We handle the tax returns and work alongside your attorney.

I’m a beneficiary and received a K-1. Can you help?
Yes. K-1s from trusts and estates are reported on your personal return — see K-1 Investors.
